What makes a word real?

A while ago I came across this TED talk which helped give me a different perspective on my issue with some new words coming into the dictionary:

I do need to get past this I know. My main struggle is with acronyms becoming words and used in sentences but through further research, words I have used all my life in sentences are acronyms – scuba, laser and radar. So why can’t I get my head around new ones coming into the dictionary?

Today even more words were added to the dictionary – sideboob, humblebrag and Yolo. So while we worry about keeping up to date with the latest trends in social media and other channels for internal communications, I think we also need to make sure we are keeping up to date with the ever evolving English language.
